About International Film Festival of India (IFFI)

  • The first IFFI was organized in Mumbai (New Empire Cinema) from 24th January to 1st February 1952. This was the first International Film Festival held anywhere in Asia.
  • It is annually held in Goa since 2004.
  • It is the biggest state-backed film festival in the world.
  • It is one of India’s biggest and Asia’s oldest film festival.
  • It is organized jointly by Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (India), Directorate of Film Festivals and Government of Goa.
  • Every year, the festival is celebrated in a grand manner in the presence of a lot of delegates, filmmakers, the government officials and the movie lovers. The film festival also announces awards every year.
  • It aims at providing a common platform for the cinemas of the world to project the excellence of the film art.
  • It seeks to promote friendship and cooperation among people of the world. It also seeks to contribute to creating awareness for understanding and appreciation of film cultures of different nations in the context of their social and cultural ethos

Key Facts

  • The 48th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) began in Goa from 20 November to 28 November 2017.
  • It was inaugurated by Superstar Shahrukh Khan in the presence of Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani.
  • This year over 195 films including 10 international premieres, 10 Asian premieres 64 Indian premieres and Oscar-winning entries from nearly 82 countries will be screened.
  • Canada is the focus country of IFFI 2017.
  • Majid Majidi’s ‘Beyond the Clouds’ is the opening film of the festival.
  • Pablo Cesar’s ‘Thinking of Him’ was the festival’s closing film.
  • 15 films from across the globe compete for the prestigious Golden and Silver Peacocks
  • Silver Peacock for the Best Actress award was won by South Indian actress Parvathy for her performance in the Malayalam movie ‘Take Off’.
